RE

It begins with a porch. A wide, welcoming thing wrapped around a restored Victorian building on a residential street in Telluride, where the San Juan Mountains rise so close they feel like neighbors rather than scenery. Dunton Town House sits just off the town's main corridor, a twelve-room property that feels less like a hotel and more like a beautifully kept private residence you've been invited to stay in. The architecture honors its nineteenth-century origins while the interiors layer in warmth, texture, and a sense of collected comfort that avoids both rustic cliché and overwrought modernism. This is a place built on intimacy and understatement, part of the wider Dunton Destinations family that includes the iconic Dunton Hot Springs and Dunton River Camp.
The rooms are individually designed, each carrying its own character while sharing a palette rooted in natural materials, rich textiles, and carefully chosen art. Expect plush bedding, deep soaking tubs, and the kind of thoughtful details that reward attention. Some rooms look out toward the mountains, others toward the quiet residential streetscape, and all share a sense of seclusion that belies the property's proximity to Telluride's restaurants, galleries, and the free gondola connecting town to Mountain Village. Common spaces encourage lingering. A living room with a fireplace serves as a natural gathering point, and the kitchen and dining areas host complimentary breakfast each morning, prepared with local and seasonal ingredients. In the evenings, wine and appetizers bring guests together before they head out to explore the town's dining scene or simply settle deeper into the house.
Telluride itself is a destination that punches well above its size. A former mining town boxed in by dramatic peaks, it operates with a year-round cultural energy that includes film, jazz, and bluegrass festivals alongside world-class skiing and hiking. The town's compact grid means nearly everything is walkable, and the surrounding wilderness offers trails, fly fishing, and backcountry exploration for those inclined to venture further. Dunton Town House provides a home base that feels genuinely rooted in this community rather than imposed upon it.
What stays with you is the scale of it all. Twelve rooms, a shared table, a front porch where you might sit with a glass of wine watching the alpenglow creep down the ridgeline. Dunton Town House doesn't compete for your attention. It earns something quieter: the feeling of belonging somewhere extraordinary, even if only for a few nights.

What strikes you first is the absence of performance — Dunton Town House doesn't announce itself the way most boutique properties do. It feels like staying in someone's deeply considered private home, one where Western heritage has been absorbed into the design rather than displayed as decoration. There's a residential quietness to it, a sense that the space was shaped around how people actually want to live in the mountains rather than how they want to be seen there. Tucked into the fabric of Telluride itself, you're never removed from the town's cultural pulse, yet the intimacy of the property creates real distance from the transactional rhythm of travel. It suits the kind of guest who values understated sophistication over spectacle — someone who's done enough to know that the best stays are the ones that feel almost effortlessly personal.

Best place to stay in Telluride! This place is absolutely fantastic. Bill and Felicia were incredibly attentive. No detail was missed. Location too is unmatched. The place is half a block from the Gondola and close to all the best restaurants and bars.

Don’t stay here if you’re looking for a perfect location 200 feet from the gondola, walkable to every restaurant and shopping place in Telluride, hear a pin drop quiet, marble shower surround with Waterworks faucets, any drink (alcoholic or not) you want included, snacks, ice cream, breakfast spread in the morning, and an exceptional on site manager (Felicia) who caters to your every need. All while supporting a small outfit and not a large hotel. If that doesn’t sound good this isn’t your place. Otherwise, give it a try.
