The building at 9 Orchard Street has watched the Lower East Side remake itself for more than a century. Originally constructed in 1912 as the Jarmulowsky Bank, the Beaux-Arts landmark once served as a beacon for immigrants arriving in a new city, its ornate facade and copper mansard roof a symbol of ambition on the skyline. Now, after a painstaking restoration, Nine Orchard opens the doors of this storied structure as a 117-room luxury hotel that honors the building's architectural grandeur while introducing a distinctly contemporary sensibility. The lobby reveals soaring ceilings, restored terra cotta detailing, and original marble floors, each surface carrying the weight and warmth of a building that was never meant to be ordinary. Rooms and suites are designed with a refined minimalism, featuring custom furnishings, arched windows that frame the neighborhood's restless energy, and bathrooms finished in stone and brass. Many rooms look out over the dense streetscape of the Lower East Side or upward toward the Manhattan skyline, grounding each stay in the specific pulse of this corner of the city.
Dining at Nine Orchard anchors the experience in two distinct directions. Corner Bar, located on the ground floor, offers cocktails and light fare in a space that feels both intimate and connected to the sidewalk life just beyond its windows. Upstairs, the rooftop restaurant DAME delivers a more elevated dining experience, with a seasonal menu that draws on global influences and a setting that opens to sweeping views across lower Manhattan. The rooftop terrace itself becomes one of the hotel's most magnetic spaces, a rare vantage point above the neighborhood's tight-knit grid of tenements and newer towers.
The surrounding blocks of Orchard, Ludlow, and Rivington Streets remain among the most culturally layered in New York. Galleries, vintage shops, dumpling houses, natural wine bars, and music venues crowd these streets in a density that resists easy categorization. Nine Orchard sits at the center of this ecosystem without attempting to replicate it indoors. Instead, the hotel provides a counterpoint, offering stillness and considered design against a neighborhood that thrives on spontaneity and creative friction.
What lingers about Nine Orchard is the tension it holds so gracefully. The restored grandeur of a century-old bank building meets the restraint of modern design, and neither element overwhelms the other. You leave feeling as though you have stayed inside a piece of the city's memory, one that has been carefully reopened rather than reinvented.

What we love about this stay
Nine Orchard sits at a crossroads that feels genuinely Lower East Side — not the sanitized version, but the one where Canal Street's chaos and Orchard Street's gallery culture collide just outside the door. Inside, the lobby catches you off guard with its natural light and bespoke furnishings, establishing a mood that's more curated residence than corporate hotel. It's a place that understands the tension between wanting to be in the thick of New York and needing somewhere quiet to land. The rooms feel considered rather than overdone, and select terraces offer that rare thing — a private moment with the cityscape. The ground-floor bistro and upstairs cocktail lounge mirror the neighborhood's own rhythm, shifting naturally from morning to night. What lingers is the sense that someone built this for people who already know New York well enough to want something that doesn't shout.

So damn cute Unbelievable- great service, very good restaurant and bar plus multiple areas to hang out that are nicely decorated - with food drink available in many of those. I personally loved location as it’s on the edge of Chinatown with an old time ny feel. love the tattoo removal place 1/2 block from tattoo parlor.
